Job Announcement:

Ashland County is seeking a dynamic and proven local government leader who will serve as its next county administrator (replacing the current county administrative who is retiring). The County is located in a beautiful area of northern Wisconsin along the shores of Lake Superior and encompassing the Apostle Islands National Seashore. The City of Ashland is the County Seat and the commercial hub of the Region. The County includes 16 municipalities, 180,000 acres of the Chequamegon National Forest and also lands in the Bad River (Lake Superior Chippewa) Reservation. Ashland County prides itself on its wide variety of year-round recreational opportunities, scenic views, spectacular waterfalls, friendly people, charming shops, restaurants and is known as the “Historic Mural Capital of Wisconsin”. The County combines a small-town quality of life in a vibrant and colorful natural environment.

Ashland County Government is a complex organization with a 2021 Budget of $21.2 million and over 200 FTE positions.  Starting salary $90-$120K +/- DOQ plus excellent fringe benefit package.  Twenty-One (21) County Board members elected on a non-partisan basis every two years provide policy oversight. The Administrator will work closely with the County Board Chair who is also elected for a two-year term.  The County desires a strong team builder and dynamic leader who will address County issues and problems; who possesses excellent budgeting and financial management skills and is prepared to invest in a long-term working relationship with the County Board and its Constitutional Officers.



Require a Bachelor’s Degree in public or business administration or related field; prefer Master’s Degree with five (5) years of upper-level local government experience with a strong desire for county government management.  ICMA-CM credential is a plus. Residency is encouraged. Desire a strong skill set in budget development and long-range financial planning; organizational strategic planning; human resources management; economic development facilitation; intergovernmental relations and a strong work ethic (commitment to public service). The successful candidate should have a high level of both personal and professional integrity; open and positive communications skills; a high degree of emotional intelligence and a history of stable tenures in previous positions.  Visit the County website at or for more detailed information.
